Computational Designer - Geometry Specialist
About Sherwood Design Engineers
Sherwood is a civil and environmental engineering firm that is committed to investing in and embracing people, communities and the environment.
Our team has delivered net zero energy and net zero carbon systems, net positive water systems, resilient coastlines, natural resource protection, green streets, living roofs and more for thousands of clients in the region and across the globe. We specialize in sustainable infrastructure, water management strategies, green building design, and systems based solutions for infrastructure and landscapes. Our focus is on the conservation and management of the consumption of all site resources — carbon, energy, water, and waste. We’ve worked on over thirty award-winning projects, and our work has been published locally and internationally.
Founded in 2003, our award-winning projects include Hudson Yards in New York (the largest private real estate development in U.S. history), San Francisco Better Streets Plan, Greater New Orleans Urban Water Plan, revitalization of the iconic waterfront Brooklyn Bridge Park, and the 35 square-km Baietan Urban Area Plan in the heart of Guangzhou, China.
Our mission is to engineer an environmentally and socially regenerative planet. Will you join us?
Role Summary
Sherwood is a mid- to senior-level Geometry Specialist to join our dynamic, multidisciplinary computational design team. Ideal candidates will demonstrate deep expertise in at least one of the following focus areas, with the flexibility to contribute across both:
Managing Geometric Workflows within Rhino and Revit: This role involves coordinating geometry integrations into Rhino and Revit from various software platforms, including Civil 3D, GIS, and others. Candidates should be skilled in developing and customizing computational workflows that span from model creation to sheet production, including managing geometric attributes and metadata.
Computing Complexity: This focus involves translating intricate site design and engineering challenges into clear geometric form-solutions that include landform, ecological materials-based, urban massing, conceptual infrastructural, architectural, etc. Model deliverables often feature complex, wild, and dynamic aesthetics; however, the ability to distill complexity into compelling, idea-rich geometric solutions is highly valued. Rapid iteration and prototyping capabilities of geometric concepts are essential.
Minimum Skills
- Typically 4+ years of experience
- Bachelor’s degree required in a technical or design-related field. We welcome candidates from either:
- Technical-focused fields (Design Technology, Computational Design, BIM, or related fields) with strong design sensibility and demonstrated interest in computational solutions for wild, fluid, ecological, or dynamic environmental, urban, and infrastructure projects; or
- Design-focused fields (Urban Design, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or related fields) with demonstrated technical skills in 3D modeling, environmental simulation, and prototyping.
- Technical Proficiency in Revit/Dynamo, Rhino/Grasshopper.
- Demonstrated experience developing computational workflows and custom solutions to support AEC projects.
- Strong attention to detail and proven ability to coordinate effectively across disciplines and project phases.
Preferred Skills
- Advanced Degree - Masters &/or PhD in a technical or design-related field
- Familiarity or experience with adjacent technologies is highly valued (Environmental simulation: CFD, Ladybug; Geospatial: GIS; Civil Infrastructure: Civil 3D; VFX and Procedural Modeling: Blender, Unity, Houdini; Fabrication: Robotics, Additive Manufacturing, Sensors and Electronics; AI/ML for 3D assets: Gaussian Splatting).
- Demonstrated ability to provide technical mentorship and guidance to peers or junior team members.
Expected Outcomes
- Computational Prototyping and Visualization: Develop prototypes, models, and visualizations to clearly communicate computational design approaches, supporting informed decision-making and guiding the team's design process.
- Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration: Partner with civil engineers, ecologists, urban designers and stakeholders, utilizing computational expertise to ensure clear communication and integrated data workflows, delivering holistic solutions for environmental and urban engineering projects.
- Complex Geometry / Model Development: Developed algorithmic models to generate and control highly complex forms (e.g., wild materials, aggregate, rock, complex physics driven or freeform topography), maintaining full parametric control throughout the design lifecycle and translating to meta-data / BIM and construction documentation sheets & bills of materials, as the basis for downstream detailing and fabrication across interdisciplinary teams.
- Interoperability & Tool Integration: Developed geometry data exchange workflows across platforms like Rhino-Grasshopper, Revit, and Blender.
- Authored scripts: (Python, C#, or GH plugins) to automate repetitive geometry creation tasks and improve cross-software collaboration. Maintain libraries of reusable scripts and components for standardizing complex geometry generation.
- Collaboration & Technical Coordination: act as geometry lead on multi-disciplinary teams
